What is MFR?

Myofascial release therapy (MFR), developed by John Barnes, is a bodywork technique that targets the fascial system. Through repeated use, injury, physical or emotional trauma, faulty movement patterns, or inheritance, we can acquire fascial restrictions. These restrictions can put up to two-thousand pounds per square inch of pressure on an area, which can cause pain, disease, and dysfunction in the body. Utilizing principles from John Barnes MFR, the approach includes sustained holds of stretches or pressure on the restricted areas to allow the restrictions to release. Often, these releases go beyond the physical sensation and can include emotional or energetic release as well. Through myofascial release, we have the potential to cause a more lasting change and healing in the body’s tissues than traditional massage, as we’re working with the collagenous barrier of the tissues rather than the elastic. When the collagenous barrier is released, the ground substance can change from a hardened state to a more liquid one, allowing for the free flow of movement, energy, and communication in the body.

Myofascial release can help with a number of symptoms and conditions, including:

  • Chronic Pain

  • Headaches
